Nude

Hello beautiful people!

I know in journalism you are not suppose to show favoritism, but this is a blog and I do what I want. In that case I am going to be bias and say OPI is my favorite nail polish. There are a few reasons OPI is at the top of my list; it is a quality product that goes on smooth and stays on long, the colors have fun names and the polish is one of the most accessible being that it is in almost every store.

In my first blog post I go a little bit more in depth behind the differences between OPI and other nail polish brands.

When the company launched their first 30 shades in 1989. The color naming meetings were top secret like they still are today.

The OPI brand won every nails readers’ choice award…yes every one since the birth of the award in 2004.

According to Erika Kotite of Nails Magazine, there are 160 active OPI shades on the market; colors are retired every year to make room for new shades.

But let us get back on track, nude.

FullSizeRender

OPI carries over 20 nude colors (if anyone knows the exact number comment below). With Bubble Bath (pictured below) probably being the most popular nude of choice.

The plus side to nudes and natural colors is they really don’t get old. Furthermore, there are many nail art styles that you can pair the nude colors with.

Above is a nude nail design by Bellacures in Los Angeles.

In high school my favorite nude color Sweet Heart by OPI. The color is similar to Bubble Bath, but a touch more pink. Over the years I could not find the color anywhere…but I finally found it!!! I recently went to Sally’s beauty shop in Los Angeles, California and there in all of its glory was an entire row of Sweet Heart polishes.

Finally, to stretch the definition of nude colors I would consider Mod About You by OPI a nude. Do you agree? Or am I stretching it too much?

Mod About You is a baby pink that has a chalky finish. If you have not tried this color I highly recommend it!

Above Tatiana and I are supporting some nude shades…paired well with any outfit nudes are the way to go!

What is your favorite nude shade? Are you on the Bubble Bath train? How about favorite polish brand?

Fairy Dust

Hello beautiful people!

It has been a hot minute since I have written a blog post, FOUR years to be exact…

So what has happened since then?

I graduated from Lipscomb University with a B.A. in Journalism and New Media, Lipscomb Volleyball won two Atlantic Sun Conference Championships, I moved to Los Angeles, California to play beach volleyball at Loyola Marymount University, I graduated with my Masters of Educational Studies, and got a big girl job. *inhales deep breath*

In the world of nail art, chrome is the hottest trend, aquarium nails are a thing and SNS is the new acrylic.

Welcome back

For my first blog post back I figured I would do a salon review.

Since moving to Los Angeles I needed to find a new spot to get my nails done. I have been searching throughout the Marina Del Rey, Venice, and Santa Monica locations for something with a great atmosphere, an accommodating staff and a salon that has plenty of options for my ever changing and indecisive mind.

I recently visited BonLierre Nail Spa in Santa Monica, they do request an appointment due to the fact that they are very busy on the weekends, but I went early in the week and there was no problem fitting me in (bonus fact they are open on Monday).

When I walked in the door I was greeted by a friendly face and a little corgi named Abby. Now if you know me you know corgi’s are my favorite!

The atmosphere felt like I was in a botanical garden because of the ever green living wall. They also use natural and organic products.

IMG_0368

The chairs were not your typical massage chairs, but more like lounge chairs, they were comfortable and made you sink right in.

I asked for a chrome gel manicure. I had gel already on my nails and thankfully they did not charge me to remove them, but they did charge an extra $15.00 for the chrome.

The nail technician joked saying they call the magic powder I picked fairy dust. She was spot on with her description, the powder looked like Tinker Bell’s fairy dust.

For the base color she applied two coats of Blue Bell from the DND gel line and layered the chrome over top, giving me this fantastic combination.

IMG_0369

Do you have a favorite color combo? How about you LA locals any nail shops you recommend?

Overall, I highly recommend this place. It was comfortable, welcoming with great service, and plenty of choices for my ever changing mind.

Finally, I am so excited to be back and blogging again! Thanks for reading!

Happy new year!

It’s 2014! Just like every year I am going to make sure this year is better than the last! Today is the first day of spring semester and I couldn’t be more excited! I am finally getting into my Telecommunication classes. That means I am finally going to be speaking on camera. I also am sideline reporting the girls basketball games for our school sports radio. It is so exciting to finally get some experience, which is also making me excited for the real world.

For Christmas I was home in the FLA and obviously had to visit Boutique nails. My mother, sister, and I all got holiday nails. We all got what Boutique nails is famous for, bio seaweed gel. Lyndsie, my sister, had the best ones I think. Just look at that snow flake! The nail tech did that by hand! IMG_0766

IMG_0764My hand is pictured left and my sisters hand is pictured right. Can you see why I was so jealous of my sisters nails?

For some reason my nails grow extremely fast and I think it’s because I am so active. The nails pictured below were my nails a week and a half later, the day after Christmas. During that time I was working out, hitting softballs with my dad, playing indoor, and beach volleyball. Those puppies held on strong!

IMG_1005

I went back to Boutique the day after Christmas and paid 35 dollars for a new set of bio seaweed gel New Years nails.

IMG_0084

If you have not noticed by now I LOVE glitter. I am currently typing with my nails the way they are pictured above. My nails have grown out a lot since I had them done, but I am going to see how long they last. With volleyball starting back up I am interested to see if they will last a month like normal.

Happy Painting! 🙂

Have you ever twerked?

I was doing the normal morning routine –like forcing myself to get out of bed — when my sister sent me a text with the nails she planned on getting. I loved the design she sent me and noticed that she found the picture of the nails on Instagram. The user name was @we_twerk_them_nails. My nails were not looking to hot, so I wanted to grab some ideas. That is when I saw what I wanted to do to my nails! The colors just look outstanding together. I had to give it a try.IMG_8846

To start this look off, I grabbed four colors that would look similar to the ones in the picture. I used L’Oreal Tangerine Crush, Opi’s Suzi Says Feng Shui, Pro Gel’s Electric Pink and Essie’s Mint Candy Apple. Let us not forget about the black stripe rite brush! You can use whatever colors you would like, these are just the ones I owned that would work together.

Let’s start with the base colors. On the thumb and pinky fingers paint Electric Pink. Continue onto the middle finger with Tangerine Crush. After, draw two parallel black lines using the black stripe rite brush on the index and ring fingers. You should get a little something like this. IMG_8849

Don’t worry about the black lines being perfect because, you will paint over them.

Add another coat of polish to the thumb, middle and pinky fingers.

Now, onto the ring and index fingers. For this design I would suggest doing them one at a time. Taking the black stripe rite brush draw two diagonal lines, which will makes the design look like four to five small triangles. There is an example pictured below.

IMG_8851 Next add Suzi Says Feng Shui to the top and bottom of the nail. Then, add Electric Pink and Mint Candy Apple. Like I said don’t worry about the black lines. Once that all dries, add another coat to both blues and the pink. Let all that dry.IMG_8852

Take the stripe rite brush and go back over the lines that were previously made. I would take this part very slow and steady to prevent any messy lines.

IMG_8853

Finally, I used gold and pink Caviar beads to complete the look. To add the beads I just used a dotting tool that had been dipped in a top coat polish. This helps the beads stick to the nail.

IMG_8855

So far your nails should look a something like this!

IMG_8850

Time to move on to the Electric Pink nails. Using a dotting tool place a dot of Suzi Says Feng Shui near the nail bed to complete the look for the thumb and pinky fingers.

For the middle finger use a dotting tool and alternate Suzi Says Feng Shui and Electric pick creating a cross shape. After those dry, using the same process as the ring and index fingers, take a dotting tool and place gold caviar beds which will outline the cross shape that you just made with the alternating dots. Finish with a top coat and that’s all there is to it! IMG_8857

Happy Painting! 🙂

Shine bright like a diamond.

This past week was amazing! I got to see my family, friends, a lot of baseball/softball and of course I got my nails done!

My sister sent me a picture from Pinertrest telling me to get my nails done like the picture. The lady who did my nails nailed it! 😉 I did bio seaweed gel like I always do when I go home. It never fails, I love my nails!IMG_8619

You can get this look with regular nail polish as well. Use OPIs Mod About You, which is similar to the light pink color on the thumb, index and pinky fingers. For the ring finger, use OPIs Mariah Carey Pink Yet Lavender. Finally for the middle finger apply OPIs Fab-YOU-lous. Completing the diamond shapes on the middle finger with a white stripe-rite brush.

I got to spend a lot of time with my grandma at home, which was a blessing. My grandma was recently diagnosed with cancer and living in Nashville I never see her. When I was with my grandma we went through old pictures. Looking through the old pictures was priceless. I got to see all my mom’s hairstyles. IMG_8753

My favorite is the bottom left picture, where she has pigtails and a plaid shirt on! Priceless!

I also found out why I am such a cool  kid now!

IMG_8754Look at that outfit!

It was a jam packed week, but worth every minute. I went to my father’s last high school softball banquet. This was his last season as East Lake’s head softball coach. This coming fall he will be the pitching coach for Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla. They are very blessed to have my father! I am being a little biased, but my dad is awesome!

IMG_8679

I also got to watch my dads travel team play. They won every game — just saying.

In the seven days that I was home I went to four baseball games and four softball games. I guess I just can’t stay away when the weather is 80 and sunny. Could you?IMG_8716

When I was not at a game, I went to the beach or the pool. Which was everyday. I live close to Clearwater beach, making it easy to sit back, relax and soak up the sun.IMG_8687

The best part about my family and the person who keeps me from going crazy, is my sister Lyndsie. IMG_8676

I think we look a lot a like. That’s just me though. My sister is the best! She acts like she will kill you if you mess with the family, but she wont kill you. She will just hit you hard. 😉

Lyndsie wants to get another puppy to keep her company. She knows that I love animals of all kinds, so she invited me to the puppy store. My mom was not happy about this. She figured I would be the one coming home with a dog and not my sister. When my sister walked into the puppy store and first saw the puppies she was worse than me! I wanted to pet all the puppies but, she actually wanted to take all of them home! Who wouldn’t though? Look at these little puppy faces!IMG_8765IMG_8763(“It’s so fluffy!!!!!!!”)

They were adorable! If you are thinking of adopting a dog or cat from a shelter please do! They all would love to be saved and have a cozy home.

Overall my trip was outstanding. It always is when I go home and see the people that I love.

Give your loved ones hugs and kisses. Live your life like it’s everyones last day.

Chevron nails and more!

This post is a little bit of everything. I don’t only love nails, but I love fashion, make-up and hair too!

This season, one go to look is a beautiful maxi skirt with a nice tank top. I got the maxi skirt pictured below from Pac-Sun. IMG_7646

The black tank top is from Forever 21. This top is see through in the back, so I wore a lace bandeau underneath. I really think this helped bring the look all together.IMG_7657

Yes, I do have a llama phone case! His name is LeBeau. 🙂

For my shoes, I always love to wear gladiator shoes with a cute skirt or shorts. You can never go wrong with them!

IMG_7073

For my hair I curled it using a flat iron. Using the flat iron is my most favorite way to curl my hair! It last for longer than two days, and adds so much volume to my hair.

IMG_7667

Now onto the best part, nails! I did my friend Alex’s nails the other day and she wanted the chevron look!

IMG_7639

I loved the look so much that I wanted to do it myself!

IMG_7686

Here’s what I did! I liked the sparkles on my ring finger and didn’t want to pant over it, so I just painted my middle finger. I free handed this look with a stripe right brush.

IMG_7684

And yes that is a llama wallet. It’s another obsession of mine.

Another way to make perfect chevron stripes, is to use a pair of zig zag scissors. First paint the nail all white and let the nail dry. Then, cut tape strips using the zig zag scissors to get the chevron shape. Paint over the tape with a different polish color. Before the polish dries take off the tape using tweezers, to get perfect chevron stripes. You can also purchase pre-cut chevron decals on Etsy.com. Anyway you paint them, you can never go wrong with the chevron look, it is very much in style.

Happy Painting! 🙂

Throw some glitter make it rain

My hexagon nail art glitter finally came in the mail! I guess you can say I was pretty excited to get new brushes and all these beautiful nail art hexagon glitter containers!IMG_7457

This kit comes with 12 different colors of hexagon glitters, which you can find on Amazon for a really good price.IMG_7458

Start with base coat. Next, paint one coat of any color polish you would like. For this step I used China Glaze For Audrey. After you let the first coat of polish dry completely, add a second coat. It is really important you allow the polish to dry in between coats, because the hexagon glitter will easily get lost or clumped in the polish.

Before doing anything with the hexagon glitter, get prepared by laying out all of the sparkles you are using, take a piece of paper and add a drop of clear coat to the paper. I used a flashcard, but you can use whatever you would like. Have your dotting tool or a tooth pick, ready to dip into the clear coat to pick up a hexagon glitter. IMG_7475

For the next step, place a single piece of the hexagon glitter onto the nail. I started placing the sparkles at the tip of the nail making sure that the side of the glitter is able to be matched up with the glitter piece that I will place next to it.

After you completely cover your nail with the hexagon glitter, add a top coat. Make sure your nails are dry before doing anything, or the hexagon glitter will easily mess up. This look takes time and patiences, but is completely worth it!

IMG_7479I love this look because I reminds me of a mermaid. What is your favorite nail design and why?

Happy Painting! 🙂

Nail Salon Review: The Nail Bar

I know I normally don’t do nail salon reviews, but I went and got my nails done the other day. I was blown out of the water! Im really disappointed I didn’t take pictures of the salon on the outside, but I got a lot of the inside. I had no idea how awesome this place really was!

The nail bar is located in Franklin Tenn. by a greek food place and a mattress store. It looks like the typical strip shop that every nail salon is in. Not on the inside though! Right when you walk into the Nail Bar you feel like you are in a 1970s night club. To me this was a sweet surprise.

The waiting room has a comfy and massive purple suede couch for customers who are waiting. The walls of the waiting room have tons of nail polish to choose from. Not to mention that all the polishes were color coordinated, making it easier on the eyes when picking out the polish you like.  The waiting room also has different types of lotion that you can choose from for a manicure or pedicure. I got Flirty and loved the smell of it. I loved that they allowed me to pick the type of lotion I wanted instead of having the typical lavender smell that I honestly can’t stand.IMG_7495

IMG_7494

When you walk into the main area of the salon there is a nail bar right in the middle of the floor. Surrounding the bar are pedicure chairs that are comfy and are always clean when you sit down. One thing I don’t like is a messy pedicure bowl that someone else just had their feet in.IMG_7505

IMG_7497

The walls are painted all black making it dark in the salon, but this is perfect for the bar look they are going for. On the sides of the bar there is a lounge area with purple suede on the walls where customers dry their nails. I loved this look! The walls made you feel like you were in an actual bar in the 1970s. This made the experience fun and different.IMG_7506

IMG_7501Not only were the surroundings cool but the service was great! The nail technicians were very accommodating and always called me by my name. The nail technicians only spoke english on the floor. I think everyone can agree that no one likes it when your nail technician starts speaking another language.

I ended up getting a gel manicure which only cost 25 dollars, and a pedicure which was 30. That is a very good price in the Nashville/Franklin area. They had a lot of gel color choices to choose from and also did not charge extra for the gel that I previously had on my nails. Normally salons charge an extra five dollars to take off your old gel polish. I was very pleased that I did not have to pay extra. My feet felt amazing and looked awesome!photo 2-4

IMG_7537Another interesting thing about the Nail Bar is that it’s BYOB. So if you are of age you can bring your own alcohol and have a good time while you are getting your nails done. This is a great idea for a evening out with the girls, a birthday party or even a bachelorette party. I went with some of my friends and we had a blast!IMG_7498

IMG_7509When paying, they accepted debit and credit card, but before you go make sure you have some cash. They only accept cash for gratuity which is inconvenient.

Overall we had a great experience at the Nail Bar salon in Franklin Tenn. and will certainly be returning.IMG_7511
